Urban Research Studio

What we do.
The Urban Research Studio (URS) investigates the ‘terra incognita’ of architecture and urban design: those unprecedented spaces that emerge as a result of contemporary urbanization, spaces that were able to evolve over and above the awareness of and control by architects and urban designers, spaces that fundamentally differ from the city as we have previously known it. Focusing on exemplary case studies at the ‘front lines’ of contemporary urban development, the URS attempts to generate new insight in order to be able to better understand, evaluate, and eventually control these emerging urban spaces by means of urban design.
The URS sees these case studies as living laboratories, as "walk-through test arrangements" for different research approaches: it examines general urban theory as well as local everyday life, it implements empirical as well as investigative research methods, it operates as observer and participant at the same time.
The URS is a project of the Professorship for Architecture and Urban Design. It has been made possible by the Fonds FILEP and is supported by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (DIZ), ETH Zurich.
